In the first 5 minutes, the film establishes Kent Ullberg as a world-renowned monumental wildlife sculptor based in Corpus Christi, Texas. Through striking visuals of his monumental works, accolades, and interviews with artists such as Dr. Guy Harvey, art directors like Luis Purón, and peers, the audience quickly understands that Kent has achieved the highest honors in wildlife art. This introduction is crucial, especially as many along the Texas coast today, particularly younger people, may not know who Kent is. The opening sets the stage for exploring his profound impact on art and conservation, underscoring that Kent is a pivotal figure in his field. Following this, we delve into Kent’s story, structured into five distinct chapters. Each chapter serves as a short film or mini-movie that could stand on its own, reflecting the multifaceted nature of Kent’s life, which feels as though he has lived multiple lives. This format naturally suits the telling of Kent’s story.

Chapter 1: “You’ll Never” (European Beginnings):

This chapter explores Kent’s early struggles in Sweden. Faced with rejection from college and societal expectations, Kent finds solace and inspiration in nature. Archival footage, interviews, and re-creations illustrate his formative years in a Swedish fishing village, highlighting his resilience and setting the stage for his lifelong commitment to art and conservation.

Chapter 2: “Parallel Dreams” (African Inspirations):

Kent’s African sojourn is unveiled, showcasing his resilience amid rejection and adaptation to obstacles. Through interviews and vibrant visuals of African wildlife, the film demonstrates how these experiences shaped his artistic vision and deepened his passion for nature.

Chapter 3: “Wind in the Sails” (Chasing the American Dream and Challenges):

This chapter delves into the Western Art Movement, exploring Kent’s passion for nature and sculpting animals in a representational manner. It examines the impact of both conventional and unconventional paths on an artist’s journey, with insights from fellow artists and historians. The chapter follows Kent’s move to America, focusing on his integration into the Western Art Movement, personal and professional growth, and resilience in the face of personal loss and professional challenges.

Chapter 4: “Monuments to Nature” (Monumental Success):

Tracing Kent’s evolution in Corpus Christi, this chapter reveals the impact of public art on culture, inspiration, mentorship, and—especially in Kent’s case—nature and conservation. Interviews with key figures such as Dr. Guy Harvey, Mayor Paulette Guajardo, and various family members and collaborators reveal Kent’s artistic impact on the community as well as his handling of personal and professional challenges. The chapter also showcases Kent’s monumental sculptures, underscoring the deep connection between his art and the natural world. This segment reflects on how his persistence led to monumental success and the fulfillment of his American dream.

Chapter 5: “American Dream” (Legacy and Reflection):

The final chapter tells the story of Kent’s monumental contribution to the namesake of Corpus Christi—“It is I”—a 15-foot statue of Christ that overlooks Corpus Christi Bay, further spotlighting his 45-year impact on South Texas. This chapter unfolds as a Künstlerroman, tracing Kent’s journey from an aspiring artist to a master of his craft. It highlights his significant contributions to public art and conservation efforts, reflecting on his growth, the challenges he overcame, and the legacy he leaves behind. The film concludes by tying back to the theme of creating something that outlives oneself, showcasing the culmination of Kent’s artistic odyssey and his lasting impact on the world.
